Academic Program
The Department of Computer Science and Statistics offers a B.S.
degree program in computer science. The program has sufficient breadth
to educate students in both the theory and the practice of computer
science. The program has been accredited since 1987 by the Computer
Scince Accreditation Board, a specialized accrediting body recognized by
the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and the U.S. Department of
Education.
Admission Requirements
Admission to the Computer Science program is open to all students
who meet the general requirements for admission to the University. The
department particularly encourages students with strong mathematical
backgrounds to apply since there is a significant component of
mathematics in the program.
Career Opportunities
Representative career opportunities for the department's
graduates are systems analyst, systems programmer, applications
programmer, data base administrator, etc. Among the companies
which hae frequently employed the department's graduates are: Texaco,
Txas Instruments, IBM, E-Systems, Sverdrup, Bell South, AT&T, Intergraph
and many others. Co-operative education opportunities are also
availabe with some of these same companies.
Computer Science Requirements
The requirements in computer science are designed to educate
students in the following areas: Theoretical foundations of computer
science, algorithms, data structures, software design, concepts of
programming languages and computer elements and architecture.
The degree program is designed to meet the needs of students
desiring to continue their education in graduate school as well
as those who would like to pursue careers in industry.
Computer Science Facilities
The Department of Computer Science and Statistics is located on
the second floor of the Chain Technology Center. Additional
departmental office space and computer labs also are located
on the second floor of the Johnson Science Tower. Hardware
support for the academic program includes a Digital AlphaServer
4100, a dual CPU Pentium II computer running Linux, several labs
with Pentium computers running Windows NT and Linux, and a
local area network which connects to Internet.
At USM the computer labs are readily available. The computer
programming labs are open to the students at least six days a
week with extended hours available whenever necessary.
Financial Assistance
The University of Southern Mississippi has an extensive program
to provide financial assistance to students. Students who qualify can
obtain loans and grants by contacting the USM Financial Aid Office. The
University awards scholarships to students who demonstrate academic
excellence. In addition, there are many opportunities for students to
work on campus as lab assistants, grading assistants, programmers,
tutors, teaching or research assistants. In awarding financial aid,
priority is given to students who apply before March 15.
The Computer Science Department participates in an active
cooperative education program. Cooperative education positions are
available throughout the Southeast at several industrial or
governmental installations, including Georgia-Pacific,
Department of the Interior, Mississippi Power, NRL, Ergon Oil,
Bell South, Bechtel, and NASA among others.
