Qualifications for the positions include an earned doctorate in computer science or closely related area by the fall of 2000 and the abilities to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct scholarly research, and obtain external funding. Qualified candidates in all areas of computer science will be considered. Those with interest in high performance computing and visualization will find great research opportunities at the John C. Stennis Space Center(SSC). The department offers a B.S. degree in computer science and M.S. degrees in computer science and computational science. The department is an integral part of an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in scientific computing that is offered in conjunction with the Departments of Physics/Astronomy and Mathematics. Additional information concerning the department is available on our WWW site: http://www.cs.usm.edu The department is an active partner in the development of the Trent Lott Supercomputer and Visualization Center located at SSC. The center will provide opportunities for research and access to state-of-the-art facilities. In addition, several faculty members have funded research projects at SSC. USM is located in Hattiesburg, Miss., which was recently recognized as one of the 10 best small cities in the United States. Hattiesburg is located 75 miles from the Stennis Space Center, one of the Department of Defense's four major shared resource centers for advanced, high-performance computing.
