Introduction The Department of Computer Science and Statistics at The University of Southern Mississippi offers Master of Science (M. S.) degree programs in two areas. The M.S. degree in Computer Science was initiated in September 1974. As of August 31, 1997, more than 280 students have graduated from this program. These students have entered a variety of fields in the computer science arena from industry to academics. This program is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of theoretical and applied computer science which will allow the student to begin exploring special topics and state-of-the-art subjects. It will train the student for advanced applications, development, and research positions in industry or for doctoral level studies. The M. S. in Computational Sciences was initiated in September 1992. This program is designed to integrate the disciplines of Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics. It will also train the student for advanced applications, development, and research positions in industry or for doctoral level studies. The department participates in a multidisciplinary Ph.D. program in scientific computing with the departments of Mathematics and Physics. This brochure is designed to give the applying student a synopsis of both degree programs. The applicant should obtain a Graduate Bulletin from the Dean of the Graduate School at the following address: Dean of
the Graduate School For additional information on any items not covered in this brochure, the applicant is directed to the USM Graduate Bulletin. If there is any variance between the USM Graduate Bulletin and this brochure, please contact the Computer Science and Statistics Department Chair for clarification. Dr.Adel
