Faculty Positions in Computer Science

There are three faculty positions open at USM:

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI _ HATTIESBURG CAMPUS

The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Statistics. Qualifications for the position include an earned doctorate in computer science by the Fall of 1999 and the abilities to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct scholarly research, and obtain external funding. Areas of primary interest are graphics, networking, and parallel computing.

The department offers a B.S. degree in computer science and M.S. degrees in computer science and computational science. The department is an integral part of an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in scientific computing that is offered in conjunction with the Departments of Physics/Astronomy and Mathematics.

Current areas of research in the department include software design, neural networks, AI, parallel processing, human factors, database design, cryptography, numerical ocean modeling, spatial data modeling, robotics, fuzzy logic, etc.

USM is located in Hattiesburg, Miss., which was recently recognized as one of the 10 best small cities in the United States. Hattiesburg is located 75 miles from the Stennis Space Center, one of the Department of Defense's four major shared resource centers for advanced, high-performance computing.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI- GULF COAST

The University of Southern Mississippi-Gulf Coast Campus invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Computer Science. The department offers both B.S. and M.S. Degrees. USM-GC Computer Science Department has approximately 125 undergraduate and 50 graduate students. The main campus is set among picturesque oaks overlooking the beach in Long Beach, MS a residential community located just west of Gulfport, MS. The University also supports three other teaching centers, all on the Mississippi Gulf Coast at Gautier, Keesler AFB, and Stennis Space Center.

Qualifications for the position include an earned doctorate in Computer Science or a closely related area and an interest in teaching and conducting scholarly research. Teaching responsibilities will include all levels of undergraduate and graduate courses in addition to supervising graduate thesis preparation. We are particularly interested in individuals with expertise in computer graphics and theory of computation. Interest in software engineering or compiler design would be a plus.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast is a rapidly growing area with a population of over 500,000 and a vibrant economy covering a broad range of economic activity including such major employers as Ingalls Shipbuilding, Litton Data Systems, Stennis Space Center, Keesler AFB, and Chevron. A burgeoning casino gaming industry and its associated attractions makes the Mississippi Gulf Coast a major tourist destination.
